Why Businesses Are Turning to Outsourced Accounting Expertise

Why Businesses Are Turning to Outsourced Accounting Expertise

Accounting has changed significantly over the past decade. Digital platforms, cloud-based systems and remote collaboration have made it possible for businesses to access accounting professionals without requiring every role to sit within an internal finance department.

This has contributed to the continued use of outsourced and selectively outsourced accounting models.

Research into accounting services among small and medium-sized enterprises found that 53% used selective outsourcing, meaning they combined internal accounting resources with an external accounting service provider. Interestingly, the research found that reducing costs was not the primary reason businesses chose this approach. Access to external expertise was the main reason.

What Does Outsourced Accounting Actually Mean?

Outsourced accounting does not necessarily mean handing an entire finance function to another company.

Businesses can choose which responsibilities remain internal and which are handled by external accounting professionals. These responsibilities may include bookkeeping, accounts payable and receivable, financial statement preparation, reporting, payroll support and other routine accounting processes.

This flexible approach allows an internal finance team to continue managing areas that require close involvement with the wider business while external professionals support specific processes or periods of increased workload.

The model is already widely used within the accounting profession. An AICPA survey of more than 1,100 accounting firms found that approximately 30% outsourced work domestically, while 25% used offshore workers.

Access to Broader Accounting Expertise

One of the practical advantages of outsourcing is access to a wider range of accounting skills.

An internal accounting department may consist of a relatively small number of people responsible for numerous financial processes. External accounting teams can add professionals experienced in particular areas without requiring the business to recruit a separate permanent employee for every responsibility.

This can be particularly useful when workloads change throughout the year.

For example, businesses may require additional accounting capacity during reporting periods, audits, financial year-end activities or periods of rapid growth. An outsourced team can supplement existing resources while allowing the internal team to retain oversight of the finance function.

Outsourcing Is Becoming Part of the Accounting Model

Recent research suggests that outsourcing is increasingly becoming part of normal accounting operations rather than simply an alternative staffing arrangement.

A 2024 QuickBooks UK survey found that 98% of surveyed accounting professionals had outsourced at least some work during the previous 12 months. Financial statement preparation and reporting was outsourced by 56%, general ledger and transaction management by 55%, and accounts payable and receivable processing by 50%.

The same survey found that scalability and risk management were among the most commonly reported benefits.

Another survey of middle-market businesses found that 45% outsourced their accounting either partially or entirely.

These figures illustrate an important shift. Outsourcing accounting is not necessarily about replacing an internal finance department. Increasingly, it is about deciding where internal resources are most valuable and where additional accounting expertise can complement them.
